Cryptorchid Conditions Explained
- Unilateral cryptorchidism (A): One testicle has not descended into the scrotum. Surgery involves locating and removing the retained testicle, which may be inguinal or abdominal.
- Bilateral cryptorchidism (B): Neither testicle has descended. Both must be surgically located and removed. This is a more complex procedure.
- Inguinal cryptorchidism (C): The retained testicle is located in the inguinal canal (groin area). This may be palpable on exam and requires an additional incision in that area for removal.
- Abdominal cryptorchidism (D): The retained testicle remains inside the abdominal cavity. This requires intra-abdominal surgery, which is more invasive.
- Risks if the Retained Testicle is Not Removed
- Reproductive risk: The cat may remain fertile and able to impregnate females.
- Behavioral risk: Testosterone-driven behaviors like spraying, roaming, and aggression will likely persist.
- Health risk: Retained testicles are prone to testicular cancer, torsion, or hormone-producing tumors, with physical and behavioral consequences.
- Family impact: Strong-smelling urine spraying, aggression, and stress affect family life, alongside higher medical risks and costs.
