Keep your senior pet mentally engaged through routines, playtime and adjusted exercises
Having pets in our lives helps us in many ways, one of which is to improve our sense of responsibility. Growing with them is such a blessing because we are able to experience their unconditional love and loyalty. Through the years, you and your senior pet will share many memories together. However, they age faster than us, so be mindful and prepared to take good care of them as they enter their senior stage. Here are some tips that might help you and your senior pet live a healthier life for a longer relationship.
As days go by, like us “hoomans” (humans), we don’t stay young forever. Our stamina wears out so as our pets’. Consider engaging in your pet in low-impact exercises. Be aware of the changes. Do not push them beyond their limits.
Train them at an early age
One of the easiest and most economical ways of training is dog walking. This activity facilitates routines. As early as a puppy, train dogs to walk either outdoor or indoor. Engage them in fun-filled routines such as fetch play. Dogs can have swimming sessions as well.
You may also consider these training activities:
- get a dog treat toy dispenser
- if the weather outside is unpleasant, you could play and run around inside the house with them
- socialize them with other dogs or people
For cats, activate their innate hunting instinct through these toys:
- Laser pointer, cat tower, cat treat toy dispenser
- If you think you can handle 2 or more cats, you can add another cat member to the family to keep them company.
Having a healthy Diet
This is one of the most crucial factors in taking good care of our dogs. Starting and maintaining a healthy diet in the early stage is a pivotal factor to achieve optimum health which ushers in longevity. Giving them the appropriate kind and amount of food. If you see that your dog is gaining weight, spend more time for a walk or for an exercise.
Visit a veterinary clinic more often
A regular check-up for them is a must as senior pets are more prone to illnesses. Your veterinary doctor may also prescribe supplements to support the inevitable aging process of the dog or the cat.
Proper hygiene for your pet
For some breed of pets, grooming is of great help in maintaining your pet’s health. Brushing long hair breeds is highly recommendable. Apart from that, their dental health must be considered too. Your pet’s set of teeth need brushing from time to time. Use oral care products from a trusted veterinary clinic to keep their teeth clean and breath fresh. These are measures which can highly prevent them from various mouth diseases.
Your pet’s eyes and ears are prone to some diseases that could lead to infections. Gentle cleaning around the eyes would probably do the trick.
You may simply use a clean damp cloth or gauze. Your pet won’t be able to warn you before they move their head so do add a touch of TLC – tender, loving, care.
Their nails should also be checked regularly, untrimmed nails can cause scratches which may possibly lead to lesions. Keep your family free of scratch scars.
Always show your affection
Cuddles work like wonder. Pets do love their bellies rubbed, massage, and in between, hugs and kisses. Talk to them, appreciate their presence, give them attention, and of course, give them treats but in moderation.
As your pet enters their senior stage, all the more that they will need your care and attention. We know it is heart-breaking, but please, do not take them for granted as they are mostly going to be with you only for a short period of time. Love them as much as you can, take care of them as much as you could, and cherish every moment that you share with them.
