To Shave or Not to Shave
Summertime is approaching and we pet owners are alarmed of what harm the summer heat can bring to our beloved companions. We want our fur babies to be cool and safe from over-heating. Read more about pet grooming for the summer heat.
Seeing our pets having a thick long coat during the summer makes us want to shave their fur off to make them feel more comfortable. Here’s a fact about a dog or a cat’s coat, their coats act as an insulator during the winter preventing them to get too cold and during the summer, it prevents them from over-heating.
However, if you prefer to have your animal’s coat shaved, think of the following; Use a clipper and do not cut it too short to avoid shaving burns. Do not just clip the fur off using a scissor as it is dangerous!. Bring your them to your professional groomer for a proper haircut and it’s a lot safer. Clipping their coats will make it more manageable.
Some dogs will have their coat ruined if shaved and might even end up losing their healthy coat for-ever. If in doubt consult our groomers for advice (04-3471028). Dogs which should never be shaved for this reason are amongst others, Akita Inu, Shiba Inu, Siberian Husky, Samojeet, Alaskan Malamute, Pomeranian, Golden retrievers and many more (all double-coated breeds). Those dogs do not need to be shaved in Summer, but need to have their undercoat blown out with a very strong blow dryer.
A Very nice article explaining it clearly you can find here
For those dogs that can be shaved, a summer-cut hairstyle doesn’t have to be very short as this can cause sunburn and even skin cancer. Ask your groomer (04-3471028) to groom your pet just short enough to make the coat more manageable and comfortable for your pet.
Bathing and brushing are also essential for all coat types, short or fluffy.
