What is the importance of a pedigree organisation?
One of our clients mentioned that pedigree papers for pets are only important for show and competition, and he was not planning to take his puppy for this, so no need to have an official pedigree paper. The parent material just had to be a pedigree type. This is a misconception as pedigree organisations protect the breed from evolving into poor representatives. They often have strong standards protected by pre-mating tests to warrant only top parent material is used for breeding, free from inborn problems, with minimal risks to forward this to their offspring. Both physical and mental problems will be limited this way.
They also forbid inbreeding above a certain percentage, they check the litters born, and follow up on abnormalities, death (abortion, stillborn, death soon after being born), health problems in offspring, they register and microchip at a young age, they control the rehoming age, they limit the number of litters a female can have and from which age and till what age you can breed with this dog, etc… All important things to know when you want a real pedigree pet and not end up with many health or mental problems in your puppy/kitten.
As the UAE does not have any pedigree organisation for dogs or cats, we see a lot of inbreeding, poor breeding standards, and sick pets which could have been prevented. Unfortunately, often already the parenting material used is of a poor standard and due to the intense breeding setup, (serious) infectious diseases are passed on, leading to unhappy outcomes.
