Vet Orthopaedics Program in Vienna

Veterinary Orthopaedics by the European School of Advanced Veterinary Studies (ESAVS), Vienna, Austria

On June 17th and 18th, Dr. Mehdi Mzabi and Dr. Metje Zegers have completed ORTHO I in Vienna, Austria.

This advanced course in veterinary orthopedics was directed by Diplomates of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS): Dr. Eva Schnabl-Feichter and Professor Dr. Gilles Dupre. Note that Prof. Dr. Gilles Dupre has been a mentor of Dr. Mehdi Mzabi for 20 years ever since he did his internship in a small animal surgery at the Centre Hospitalier Veterinaire Fregis, Paris, France.

This advanced orthopedic program started with 5-day theoretical training attended by Dr. Metje and Dr. Mehdi respectively in August 2020 and February 2021 on the following topics:

  • Anatomy and Neurovascular supply of the Forelimb and Hindlimb
  • Orthopaedic and Neurologic examinations
  • Normal gait in dogs
  • Radiography, CT, and MRI imaging
  • Pathophysiology of OA and Nutraceuticals
  • Emerging therapies, joint replacement, and other forms of arthritis
  • Fetal development
  • Orthopaedic diseases and nutrition in juvenile animals
  • Musculoskeletal development and lose weight tips
  • Case studies

Dr. Mehdi Mzabi and Dr. Metje Zegers then traveled to the beautiful city of Vienna for the validation of ORTHO I. They attended an onsite practical course focusing on:

  • Day 1 – anatomy of limbs, orthopaedic examination, lameness analysis, & Arthrocentesis;
  • Day 2 – ultrasonography in orthopaedics, interpret a joint tap, & the results of the cytology.
