Laparoscopic Spay (Lap-Spay): the New Norm for Pets
Less Pain, Faster Recovery, Better Care: Laparoscopic Spay Explained.
When it comes to surgery, most of us would prefer the least invasive, least painful, and fastest-healing option. The same applies to our pets. So when we consider sterilization, or spay surgery, the question naturally arises: Would you choose an “open” surgery—or a laparoscopic (keyhole) one?
At Al Barsha Veterinary Clinic (ABVC) in Dubai, we have been performing laparoscopic spays (Lap-Spay) for years using Storz instrumentation, the same precision equipment used in human hospitals.
What Is Laparoscopy? Laparoscopy, also called keyhole surgery or minimally invasive surgery, is a technique that allows surgeons to explore and operate inside the abdomen through tiny incisions (0.3–1.2 cm). A small camera (laparoscope) transmits a magnified image of the internal organs to a high-definition monitor, allowing the surgeon to perform the procedure with exceptional precision and minimal tissue trauma. At ABVC, we use this technology mainly for spay surgeries, known as Lap-Spay, but also for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in dogs, cats and soon rabbits.
What Instruments Are Used in Laparoscopy? At Al Barsha Veterinary Clinic, we exclusively use Storz laparoscopic equipment, one of the world’s leading brands in medical and veterinary surgery. Our setup includes:
- Storz high-definition camera and monitor
- Storz laparoscope (endoscope)
- Trocars and forceps
- Ligasure vessel-sealing system
- Storz CO₂ insufflator for controlled abdominal inflation
