ABVC Pet Renal Health: Understanding Kidney Disease in Pets

Kidney disease is one of the most common silent illnesses in dogs and cats. The kidneys act as the body’s filter; when they fail, toxins build up in the blood and the first changes are often subtle — a bit more drinking, a lighter appetite, slower movement, a dull coat. By the time clear symptoms appear, a large part of kidney function may already be lost.

Why early check-ups matter
Kidney failure develops slowly and without pain. Simple blood and urine tests can pick up early warning signs — raised kidney values, protein loss in urine, blood pressure changes. Catching it early gives us time to slow progression and protect quality of life.

Not only a senior problem
Although age increases the risk, kidney disease is not limited to elderly pets. Poison exposure (lilies, antifreeze, some human drugs), breed predisposition, urinary crystals or stones, infections, tumors, or other systemic disease can trigger renal failure at a young age. This is why screening is recommended when symptoms or risk factors are present, regardless of age.

Living with kidney disease
Chronic kidney disease cannot be cured, but it can be managed. Treatment focuses on hydration, pressure control, tailored medication, and a renal diet to reduce kidney workload. With the right plan many pets live comfortably for years after diagnosis.

Hydration matters
Easy access to water is key: multiple bowls, fountains with running water, and choosing food with moisture content help increase intake. Avoid direct tap water if your pet refuses it — filtered or running water is often accepted better.

What to watch for at home
• Increased drinking or urination
• Loss of appetite or weight loss
• Vomiting or nausea
• Gum disease or bad breath
• Muscle wasting
• Dull coat or reduced energy

When to book a kidney check
If you notice any of these signs, or your pet has a known risk factor (stone history, toxin exposure, hereditary breed risk), do not wait for old age. Early action buys time, comfort, and quality of life.
