ABVC PET TRAVEL & RELOCATION: New regulation for Dog to USA
Starting August 1, 2024 new rules go into effect. This is the temporary suspension of dog importation from high-risk dog countries for dog rabies, which expires July 31, 2024. Importers can no longer apply for CDC Dog Import Permits and will no longer be accepted after August 31, 2024. CDC has the authority to issue a CDC Dog Import Permit to bring in 1 or 2 dogs from a high-risk country for dog rabies. Only dogs that have been immunized against rabies in another country will be granted permits. Dogs with current valid US issued rabies vaccination certificates do not need a permit.
CDC issues regulations to control the entry of dogs into the United States from other countries. These rules apply to all dogs, including puppies, service animals, and dogs that left the United States and are returning. They also apply whether you are a U.S. citizen, legal U.S. resident, or foreign national.
Why Entry of Dogs to the United States Is Controlled:
Rabies is over 99% fatal and is 100% preventable. The US dispensed with canine rabies in 2007, however canine rabies isn’t controlled in north of 100 nations — making a gamble to the US in imported canines. By enforcing regulations, the CDC aims to stop the reintroduction of dog rabies into the United States and safeguard America’s families, communities, and pets. A top priority for public health is preventing infected dogs from entering the United States. Preventing infected dogs from entering the United States is a public health priority. Each dog imported with rabies could infect people and other animals and could cost more than half a million dollars to contain.
Why it’s important now: CDC refreshed its canine and feline importation guideline in 2024 for the safety of people and animals and to prevent the reintroduction of dog rabies to the United States. The refreshed guideline will assist with protecting Americans and their pets. It tends to late difficulties seen with worldwide canine importations, including the difficulties presented by fake documentation.
Standardization of the dog importation process, counting standard prerequisites for the base period of imported canines, microchips, the CDC Dog Import Form, and other documentation, will streamline the importation process and allow for safer and more efficient entry of dogs into the United States.
